A stroll through Gallipoli, a picturesque coastal town in Puglia, with a professional guide offers a perfect blend of maritime charm and rich history. You will start your walking tour from the port and in few minutes you will reach the old town, a maze of narrow streets on an island linked to the mainland by a 16th-century bridge, with stunning views of the turquoise Ionian Sea. Your first stop will be at the imposing Castello Angioino, a fortress with panoramic views of the harbour, then visit the Baroque Cattedrale di Sant’Agata with its intricate frescoes.
As you delve deeper into Gallipoli's history, you'll discover one of its hidden treasures: the "frantoio ipogeo," an underground olive oil mill. Carved into soft limestone, these ancient mills were once the heart of Gallipoli’s thriving olive oil industry during the Renaissance. Walking through the cool, dimly lit chambers, lined with stone basins and presses, you’ll step back in time to when the town’s “liquid gold” was exported across Europe.
Please note: This tour involves about 4 km walking on uneven ground, that might be slippery. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the churches. Temperatures might be very high make sure to bring enough water, sun block and hat.
